(BEIJING, December 27) -- At its 91st meeting, the Executive Board (EB) of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) called for enhancement of the training work for the Beijing Paralympic Games.
The Beijing Olympic Games Training Work Coordination Group put forth its views: further study the documents of the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC); consider training an important part of the preparations for the Paralympics and of the work for the construction of a harmonious society; define general requests and specific characteristics of training and focus on wider coverage and more effective training; target the key groups of trainees; and widely engage in a campaign of reaching out to people with a disability.
The Executive Board, chaired by BOCOG President Liu Qi, also heard a report on the focused volunteer training for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. There will be an estimated 30,000 Games-time volunteers serving the Paralympics.
Compared with the Olympic Games, training for the volunteers of the Paralympic Games has special requirements and the training tasks will be more difficult. The volunteers will need to understand the perspective of people with a disability in today's civilized social setting. They will need to become well educated in Paralympic knowledge and have a strong skill set to aid people with a disability.
The humanitarianism and skills necessary to fulfilling this volunteer role can only be achieved through interaction with people with a disability and practice.
Additionally, it was pointed out at the EB meeting that the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) stressed placing a high degree of importance on the preparations for the Beijing Paralympic Games in order to make the Paralympic Games and Olympic Games "equally splendid."
The 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) emphasized accelerating Paralympic training and focused training for Paralympic volunteers. Only by recognizing the extensiveness, special requirements of and level of difficulty of the Olympic preparation work will it be possible to carry out high quality and highly effective preparations.
The EB recommended taking the Good Luck Beijing wheelchair basketball sport event in January as an opportunity to speed up the organization of the Paralympic venue teams, Games-time volunteers and training work.
It is necessary to increase the promotion of the Beijing Paralympic Games and to raise the level of awareness for the Paralympics across society.
