US swim star Michael Phelps won titles in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke but settled for second in the 100-yard breaststroke Monday at the Southern California Grand Prix meet.

LONG BEACH, California, Jan 21, 2008 - US swim star Michael Phelps won titles in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke but settled for second in the 100-yard breaststroke Monday at the Southern California Grand Prix meet.
Phelps finished with five titles in his first major competition of a year that will see him attempt to challenge Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in August.
Phelps won the 100 freestyle and 500 freestyle on Saturday and the 400 individual medley on Sunday at the short course yards event.
In the 100 butterfly, Phelps won in 45.40 seconds with Matt Grevers second in 46.33 and in the 100 backstroke, Phelps won in 45.50 seconds with Peter Marshall the runner-up, .15 of a second off the pace.
But Phelps missed the chance to double his title take on the final day of the meet when Mark Gangloff won the 100 breaststroke in 53.09 with Phelps second in 53.41.
